The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to introduce an additional criterion that will allow students who are in the top 20 percentile of their board exam to be eligible for admissions based on their scores in JEE Main. The decision was made during a meeting in the ministry on Monday.
Previously, students hoping to secure admission through JEE Main would need to score 75% and above in their class 12th exam. However, with the new rules in place, those in the top 20 percentile across all boards will be eligible for admissions based on their JEE Main score.
For JEE Main, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has released an information brochure stating that student’s All India Rank (AIR) in the national entrance test for engineering admissions is not the only factor considered for admission. Additionally, a score of 75% or higher in class 12 is mandatory for general category aspirants and 65% or higher for SC/ST candidates.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) is a computer-based entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to determine admission into engineering colleges across India. Due to the Covid pandemic, the original requirement of passing Class 12 exams with minimum marks was suspended in the past three years. However, with resumption of normalcy condition and uniform evaluation practices by different boards, state and national – the original eligibility criteria has been resumed.
